You’ve done your research on the safest car, purchased a carseat that has gone through about 10 thousand crash tests, but is your car seat properly installed? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 75% of carseats are improperly installed. The NHTSA also states that car crashes are the largest cause of fatalities and serious injuries for children between ages 2 and 15.
Car seat safety is just as important, if not more important than childproofing your home. There are a number of Car Seat Inspection Stations throughout Nassau, Suffolk and Queens Counties. Most require appointments and the service is free (a donation is always nice though). Prior to having your seat installed or inspected, you’ll need to check for recalls on the NHTSA’s website, so be sure to have your car seat’s make, model and ID available. Finally, bring your installation manual with you to the fitting or have it ready to go on your cell phone.
